Greetings
This is my story
My name is Max Allen Duroseau. I am a Haitian-American artist and educator from Miami, FL, that is currently based in Shanghai, China. I primarily focus on portraiture, documentary, street, and fine art photography. My goal is to tell authentic stories that show both the beauty and complexity of human nature.

From as early as the age of seven, I recognized my passion for photography while flipping through the pages of a National Geographic magazine. I was acutely aware that someone was responsible for creating those images that captivated me, and knew I wanted to do the same thing when I got older.
My relationship with photography did not fully blossom until I purchased my first film camera, while attending The Florida State University from 2014-2016. This not only marked a key moment in my creative journey, but also the beginning of my love for film photography, which I frequently use as a medium to present my artistic vision.
I’ve always been drawn to people. I get curious about peoples stories, where they come from and where they’re going. This is why I love portraiture. It provides a medium and framework for exploration that is not only outward but also inward. For this reason, identity has emerged as a major theme in my work. Seeking to make sense of who you are in a confusing world is the most important work one can engage in. When I’m creating, I feel free and most in touch with divinity. I lose track of time.
Through the use of imagery and thought-provoking narrative, my work aims to uplift the voices from below. I have a passion for highlighting those who are underrepresented such as racial and ethnic minorities, as well as the poor and underprivileged. In their stories are our stories, and I want to find compelling ways to make their voices more prominent and worthy of engagement. I want to tell stories that reshape how we see ourselves.
Whenever possible, I do this by traveling to the countryside. I search for villages and rural communities, and spend time in those regions taking photos. When I’m not traveling, I like to go out into my neighborhood to do street photography, which is gratifying in its own way. Lastly, I hope to do more concept work, which creates room for imaginative play such as fashion and beauty photography. These are all the ways I aim to accomplish my creative goals as an artist.
I remain inspired by the works of such artists like Gordon Parks, Romare Bearden, and John T. Biggers. I would describe my style as romantic, introspective, personal, and emotive.
My work has been featured in the Art of Inclusion showcase in 2019, in Columbia, MO, with more to come.
